Moviemaker missing on Windows 7?

If you have changed to Windows 7 - you might have realised that Moviemaker is not part of the package anymore. There is an option to download a free "life" version. This is a new version with a different interface. At first sight it has similiarities with the newer iMovie versions from Apple. Experiences and feedback welcome!

Youtube will soon (apparently from yesterday) be offering full HD capability for their uploads. Already uploaded full HD material will gradually be converted to the higher resolution.

At the same time - youtube is still blocked in Turkey ..

Editing software for MOD video files

Most video editing software struggles with the "MOD" files which are produced by a lot of standard quality video cameras at the moment. I just came across the AVS Video Editor which seems quite happy to import and edit those files. Check it out for yourselves here.

Evens Prize for Intercultural Education 2009: Media Education

From our colleagues in Antwerp: Check out the Evens Prize for Intercultural Education 2009: Media Education: "With this sixth edition of the Evens prize for Intercultural Education to be awarded in 2009, the Evens Foundation seeks to highlight the importance of MEDIA EDUCATION and to support the development of new sustainable proposals in this field in Europe targeting children."

Proposals should be submitted before the January 15th 2009. There is an overall prize money of 50.000 Euro available.

Simple animations with Moviemaker and still images

Stop animation seems to become a more and more popular feature and there is a wide range of special software available. However it is very straight forward to make your own basic animations with software such as moviemaker.
Just create a series of low resolution still images (something like 1024/768 or 800/600) and import them to Moviemaker. You need to set the duration for the still images in the "Tools- Options - Advanced" menu to 0,125 seconds to make sure that you don't need to change the length of each image. Then just import you images and add titles and sound.
You find an example below from our last teacher trainnig course, done in 40 minutes all together:

Youtube and High Quality Videos

Since quite a few have asked me about this: Yes, Youtube has now a high quality modus for the video playback. If you upload your video in a good enough quality (at least the specs below) you should have the option to watch the material on higher quality (obviously only if you have a faster internet connection). The difference is quite visible.

Youtube recommends this:

MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format
MP3 audio
Video resolution: 480x360 or higher
Frame Rate: 24fps or higher

Budget Canon video cameras with microphone input

Although the very useful microphone input on budget cameras has generally disappeared some of the new Canon budget models have a socket included again. This is good news, an external microphone is essential for interviews and other recordings where the sound is important.

Videospin - first experiences

Some first experiences with this freeware: The general interface is very much based on the Pinnacle studio software and easy to use. Videospin has got quite a few limitations:
- there is no device control, so therefore no chance to import video footage from a mini-DV camera
- the video codecs are limited and you need to pay 15 Euro to upgrade for the mpeg 2 and 4 codec (something you would need to import from DVD / memory card / harddisc videocameras and to export to youtube and similiar video portals).
You can still use it to edit still images, avi files. You can put easily subtitles on and overlay it with sound but without all codecs it is too limited. So free but not really free!

New Apple entry level software with AVCHD codec

Apple's new iMovie '08 seems to be the first entry level editing package with the High Definition AVCHD codec included.

New teacher training courses in Berlin in 2008 and 2009

Four new courses have been accepted by the European Commission and we can offer all courses again in Berlin. The courses are designed especially for history and language teachers and look into the link of media education and video production with these subjects.
You need to contact your National Socrates / Life Long Learning Agency to find out about the application procedure. Once your application is accepted you will get a grant to cover most expenses including the full course fee.
